Ahmedabad: Premier Narendra Modi himself interacted in person with this 20-year-old social worker who especially focusses on betterment of visually-challenged girls and women. ‘Doing things’ for society is the youngster’s mission.
Kalgi -- meaning 'beauty' in Gujarati -- is visually-challenged but she is also a radio jockey, a motivator and an anchor all rolled into one and established the N.G.O. ‘Kalgi Foundation’ engaged in a ‘Save the Girl, Educate Her’ campaign that found support from numerous renowned individuals, social workers and N.R.I.s.
A believer in the elephant-headed God of the Hindu pantheon and Vanquisher of Obstacles, her motivation mantracomprises self-confidence, concentration and determination. Besides, she emphasises on four ‘F’s in life – Friends, Family, Faith and Fun. Fluent in Gujarati, Hindi and English, Kalgi delivers her speeches in a mere 20 minutes and then takes questions for 10 minutes. Try and try again till success smiles at you, is the belief she spreads. The young lady also motivates street and municipal schoolchildren.
“I’m singularly fortunate to have such a wonderful daughter,” avers her father Trikendra Rawal in the course of an interaction with ‘Developing India Mirror’. Kalgi, who scored 76 % in the 10th standard, is preparing for higher secondary exams.
“My dad is the Almighty’s greatest gift,” she says. In 2012, she participated in the ‘Chaalo Gujarat’ event in the U.S.A. and got a chance of anchoring in front of thousands.
“Eyes have not enough light to see the entire world, but there is passion in the heart to change the whole world,” she observes while lecturing to those preparing for competitive examinations.
Kalgi is visually-challenged but no one can challenge her determination to give new ‘vision’. She desires to proffer new insight to those who have dreams and to those who think that girls are nothing other than a burden.
“Strange is the logic of our mind… We look for compromise when we are wrong and for justice when others are wrong,” she says.
