New Innovations required for preserving Nutrients in the processed food: NIN Director

Hyderabad, Sep 23 (UNI) Dr R Hemalatha, Director, ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), DHR, MoHFW, on Friday mentioned that Food processing sector has always played a major role in increasing the shelf life of the food products and saving food losses from production to consumption.
New innovations are required in protecting the nutrients value in the food while processing and also while maintaining the quality of food, said Dr Hemalatha while addressing at ‘TS-FoodBiz’ , a conference on Latest Food Processing Technologies and Allied Industries, organized by CII-Telangana here.,
NIN and Industry could collaborate to come up with good innovations, she said.
It is observed that a high rate of anemia among a large population is due to low nutrient presence in our food. Food processing drives the economy. It is important to maintain quality. In the long run it will impact not only human health but also planet health, she said.
She also urged industry to work in collaboration with NIN in building a nutrition and health centric economy.
Speaking on the occasion,Ms. Suseela Chintala, Chief General Manager, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD)- Telangana, mentioned how industry could develop mega food parks with cold chain units, backward linkages.
She also mentioned that there are seven incubation centres in the Agriculture sector across the country of which about two centres are located in Hyderabad -- AGHUB at Agriculture University and another centre at MANAGE.
She also briefed about NAP ventures and NAP Kiran interventions by NABARD. Among the more than 10000 FPOs in the country more than 6000 FPOs are being promoted by NABARD.
C Shekar Reddy, Vice Chairman, CII Telangana & Chairman & Managing Director, CSR Estates Limited said that the food processing sector provides an opportunity to utilize excess production capacities in the food sector in an efficient manner. Food processing sector has become an integral part of the food supply chain and India is witnessing tremendous growth in recent years. The State’s food processing policy is also very helpful in strengthening the sector.
Rajasekhar Reddy Seelam, Convenor, CII Telangana Agri & Food Processing Panel & Managing Director, Sresta Natural Bioproducts Pvt Ltd. Said that the State Government’s efforts to develop special food processing zones and to bring 53 lakh acres area under irrigation by 2024-25 may give a great impetus to the growth momentum. The sector is expected to provide employment to more than 70000 people.
Dr Rangaiah V Setlem, Co-Convenor, CII Telangana Agri & Food Processing Panel & CEO, Indigene Protein Foods Pvt Ltd also mentioned that everyone is looking for healthy food and we need to reduce our dependence on edible oils imports. Increased demand for Indian food abroad is also helping in adding growth in the food processing sector.
