UP witnesses highest-ever spike of 2,083 nCoV fresh cases

Lucknow, Jul 16 (UNI) With a record 2,083 fresh cases of Covid 19 in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, the infection tally in the state climbed to 43,441.

The death toll reached 1,046 with 34 fresh fatalities.
State Additional Chief Secretary, Health Amit Mohan Prasad said here on Thursday that there are 15,720 active cases in the state while 26,675 have recovered, including 932 people, who were discharged from hospital today.

There are 15,723 people in the isolation beds of the Covid hospitals and 4,123 in the institutional quarantine.

However, five cities in the state witnessed surge in the positive cases with a record 308 new cases in Lucknow, followed by 179 in Ghaziabad, 143 in Gautam Buddha Nagar, 113 in Jhansi and 100 in Chandauli.

Mr Prasad said, yesterday, a record 48,686 tests were done and now the total number of Covid tests in the state has reached another milestone of 13,25,327 so far.

Of the total tests done on Wednesday, 2,443 tests were pool of 5 samples and 371 pools of 10 samples. In the pool of five samples, 371 were found positive and in the pool of 10 samples, 46 were infected with the virus.

Expressing concern over the spurt in the contagion cases in Lucknow, Jhansi,Varanasi , Kanpur, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has rushed nodal officers to monitor the whether the 'Unlock' guidelines were being adhered to.

Meanwhile, Mr Prasad said that in s major achievement, the state has done a good job in containing Maternal Mortality Rate(MMR) which has come down, as per the latest figures of the central government.

He said UP, which had recorded 216 infant deaths per lakh new born in the state during 2016-18, now registered 197 deaths per lakh.

The health official said the government will launch pneumococcal vaccine for preventing pneumonia among the infants in 56 districts of the state. The vaccine programme is already implemented in 19 districts and now renaming 56 districts would be covered from August 8.

The training programme for this campaign was held today.
