Sukhbir Badal condemns lathi charge on teachers in Patiala

Chandigarh, Feb 10 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday condemned the brutal lathi charge on teachers in Patiala when they were proceeding to 'gherao' (surround) the residence of chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh.

Terming the act as murder of democracy, the SAD President said that the lathi charge on teachers coupled with use of high pressure water canons was reminiscent of the rule of an arrogant and dictatorial Raja.

Expressing sympathies with those injured in the brutal police action, Mr Badal said it was shocking that woman teachers had been handled in such an inhuman manner. “It seems the government wanted to teach a lesson to teachers for trying to gherao the residence of the CM. This is why no attempt was made to address their concerns and instead they were manhandled to crush their democratic protest”.

Meanwhile SAD general secretary Bikram Singh Majithia while condemning the police action on protesting teachers on the occasion of Basant Panchmi, said the voice of democracy could not be muzzled in this fashion. He urged youth across the State to show solidarity with the striking teachers of Adarsh schools, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA). He also demanded immediate registration or criminal cases against all police officials who had manhandled woman teachers. We cannot tolerate those who are moulding our future generations to be treated in this manner”, he added.
