The prices of Ganesh idols have increased by almost 35 per cent this year but this has not dampened the enthusiasm of the devotes even a wee bit as the sales are as brisk as ever, say Bhalchandra Deshmukh, a leading idol-maker in the city, who has been in the profession for well over eight dacades.
"Our hands are full," he says. Mr Deshmukh has around 300 emplyees, who are working round-the clock to meet the orders. " We make idols, which are priced between Rs 3000 and Rs 40, 000, he says. According to rough estimate, there are around 3,500 idol-makers in the state.
Pen in Raigad district of Maharshtra is home to famed artisans, who have gained a formidable reputation in the art of ganesh idols making. But these artisans, who use traditional methods, have slowly been losing out to bigger manufacturers, who use modern methods of idol making.
