Bengaluru/New Delhi, Aug 31 (UNI) The Cauvery River Water Management Authority has instructed Karnataka to release 30.6 tmc of water to Tamil Nadu immediately.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cauvery Management Authority held Tuesday here.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, CRWMA SK Haldar said Karnataka was supposed to release 86 tmc of water by the end of August, but released 57 tmc. "So we told Karnataka to release the remaining water," he said.
The remaining dumping of the water to Tamil Nadu was pending for three months.
Tamil Nadu insisted on the release of 86.38 tmc water to Tamil Nadu from Cauvery.
The issue of Mekedatu also was discussed at the meeting, but postponed to a later date, due to lack of consensus between Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments over the construction of a dam across Cauvery.
The DPR submitted by Karnataka requires consent of the other two states before the CRWMA approves the project.
During the meeting Tamil insisted not to discuss the Mekedatu project which is a matter of sub-judice. The Supreme Court is hearing the matter.
The Puducherry Assembly Monday had passed a resolution against the Mekedatu project.
Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 14 in this regard.
He fears that Puducherry will not get its due share of 7 tmc of Cauvery water if the dam is built at Mekedatu.
Meanwhile, Cauvery delta farmers in Tamil Nadu Monday met Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and sought the support of his government in this regard.
