Rajasthan: 40.39 pc voter turnout till 1 pm

Jaipur, April 26 (UNI) Around 40.39 per cent of 2.80 crore voters exercised their franchise in the first six hours of Lok Sabha elections from 13 seats of Rajasthan amid tight security arrangements on Friday.
The poll officers said that in the final phase of LS polling from the state, Barmer recorded the highest turnout of 47.48 percent till 1 am.
Among other seats, 35.77 percent votes were polled in Ajmer, 46.53 percent in Banswara, 37.01 percent in Bhilwara, 40.50 percent in Chittorgarh, 41.47 in Jalore, 44.2 percent in Jhalawar-Baran, 42.51 percent in Kota, 39.9 percent in Jodhpur, 36.59 percent in Pali, 36.88 percent in Rajsamand, 34.64 percent in Tonk-Sawai Madhopur and 41.32 per cent in Udaipur.
Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Gupta said that polling which began at 7 am is by and large peaceful and will continue till 6 pm. Polling is being held at 28,758 polling stations of the state in the second and final phase. "This includes 653 auxiliary polling stations including 4,778 urban and 23,327 rural," he said.
He said that to encourage electorates 1,768 special polling centres have been set up in which 832 polling centres will be operated by women and the same number of polling centres by youth and 104 polling centres will be operated by disabled personnel.

Over 1000 people affected as storm hits Meghalaya

Shillong, May 6 (UNI) Over 1000 people have been affected and 483 houses damaged after heavy rainfall accompanied by cyclonic storm and hailstorm hit several parts of Meghalaya since Sunday, an official said on Monday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region for another 48 hours.
