PM Modi attends first meeting of National Ganga Council in Kanpur

Kanpur, Dec 14 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday attended the first meeting of the National Ganga Council in this industrial city and reviewed progress of Namami Gange project.
Mr Modi reached the Chakeri Airport at around 1025 hrs, this morning where he was welcomed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and State Industrial Development Minister Satish Mahana.
Later, the Prime Minister left for Chandrashekhar Azad Agriculture University in a helicopter.
After reaching the University, Mr Modi payed tributes to the statue of freedom struggle revolutionary Chandrashekhar Azad. He then visited the Namami Gange exhibition and heard the Namami Gange song before the first meeting of the NGC.
Apart from Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and UP CM Yogi Adityanath, several Union ministers and officials related to the project were present in the meeting.
Post the review meeting, the PM will visit Atal Ghat where he will oversee the state of the drains flowing into the Ganga, on a boat. The PM may also make some announcements regarding the 'Namami Gange' project.
The 300 MLDs flowing into the Ganga from all 16 drains in Kanpur had been closed permanently from Thursday night. According to official sources, closing the sewers and drains which discharge pollutants into the river will lead to significant changes in the water quality of the river.
Sisamau drain, which deteriorated the Ganga river's state in Kanpur has now been tapped. The drain used to release 145 MLDs of toxic substances into the river everyday but has now been closed.
