Political parties should not convert opposition of any individual/party to opposition of country: PM

Kanpur, July 25 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called upon all political parties not to escalate their opposition to any individual or a particular party to such an extent that it turns into opposition to the country.
Addressing the function organised at Mehrwan Purwa, Kanpur on the occasion of 10th death anniversary of senior socialist leader Chaudhary Harmehan Singh, through virtual medium, Modi said that it is the responsibility of all political parties to respect the boundaries of protest based on ideology.
The Prime Minister said that when the country's democracy was crushed during the Emergency, all the major parties came together and fought to save the Constitution.
Modi said that when the country's democracy was crushed during the Emergency, all the major parties came together and fought to save the Constitution. Chaudhary Harmohan Singh Yadav was also a fighting soldier in this fight, he added.
The Prime Minister also expressed concern over the increasing tendency of political ambition and party politics to affect the interest of the country.
"However, in recent times, there has been a trend to put ideology or political interests above the interest of the society and the country," he noted.
The Prime Minister argued that the existence of political parties is because of democracy and the existence of democracy is because of the country.
In Kanpur district, Ch Harmohan Singh emerged as a strong leader of the socialist movement and was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament.
Recalling his contribution, Modi said, "Lohia ji's ideas were carried forward in his long political career by Harmohan Singh Yadav ji from the soil of Uttar Pradesh and Kanpur."
