Mukhtar sentences to life imprisonment in fake arm licence case

Varanasi, Mar 13 (UNI) Mafia-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court in Varanasi with a penalty of Rs 2.02 lakh on Wednesday in a more than 33 year old fake arm licence case, prosecution sources said here.
Prosecution sources said that the MP-MLA court of Additional Sessions Judge Avanish Gautam, which had held Mukhtar guilty on Tuesday, pronounced the quantum of punishment on Wednesday. "Mukhtar, who is currently lodged in Banda jail, appeared before the court through video-conferencing," they said.
The prosecution said that in June 1987, Mukhtar submitted an application for the licence of a double-barrel gun in the office of the then District Magistrate, Ghazipur. "It was alleged that in connivance with the staff, Mukhtar obtained the licence through forged signatures of the DM and the then Superintendent of Police (SP)," they said.
