FIR filed over ‘conversion’ of non-local in Srinagar

Srinagar, Apr 6 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir police has filed an FIR (first information report) in an alleged conversion of a non-local in Srinagar’s Hazratbal Shrine.
The FIR was registered under sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant), 298 (uttering words, etc., with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings intentionally), 153 (wantonly giving provocation, with intent to cause riot) and 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence) of the Indian Penal Code at Nigeen police station in Srinagar on Friday.
The FIR has been registered against the non-local who was converted and a Srinagar resident for allegedly preparing him mentally to convert, police said on Saturday.
In the FIR, police said that they received an information through reliable sources that a news was being circulated on social media especially Facebook, in which a resident of Haryana was allegedly converted during Friday congregational prayer at Hazratbal Shrine.
A video of the conversion went viral on social media following incident.
The FIR said the non-local was working in the house of a Srinagar resident and he motivated him to convert.
The said news caused chaos which may stoke communal hatred, the FIR read.
Taking cognizance of incident, District Magistrate Sringar issued an order warning both print and electronic media houses against uploading any material leading to communal frenzy or hurting religious sentiments of people or which may prove detrimental to the peace.
Further investigation of the case is underway, sources added.
