MGMCRI selected for Phase III clinical trials of COVAXIN

Puducherry, Nov 24(UNI) Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMCRI), a constituent college of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Deemed to be University, here has been selected as one of the centres entrusted with the task of conducting Phase III Clinical Trials of COVAXIN.
According to Subash Chandra Parija,Vice-chancellor of Balaji Vidyapeeth on Tuesday, COVAXIN, an inactivated vaccine jointly developed by Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and Bharat Biotech Limited, Hyderabad is figuring in the Phase III clinical trials and MGMCRI figures along with 21 other centres in India approved by Central Licensing Authority, Drug Controller of India for testing the safety and efficacy of Corona Virus vaccine (BBV152B) on a total over 28,000 subjects. The challenges of the government and public health in needs of the region is significant that has now led MGMCRI to take several steps forward and MGMCRI has taken various initiatives to supplement the efforts of the Government of Puducherry in terms of testing and tracing,Parija said.
Dr. S.R. Rao, Vice President (Research, Innovation and Development), SBV said that the study of this event driven Phase III multi-centric approach to ascertain the efficacy and safety of the inactivated SARS – COV – II Vaccine in adults. The molecular diagnostic laboratory at MGMCRI is accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing, Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and recognized by ICMR and the Phase III trials will begin soon and intend to cover 1200 volunteers,he added. Interested persons can register as volunteers and preference would be accorded to health care workers, doctors, nurses and security personnel.
