Kolkata, Nov 11 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday
remembered Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Acharya JB Kripalani on their birth
anniversaries.
" Remembering freedom fighter and well-known educationist Maulana Abul Kalam
Azad on his birth anniversary. We have named the West Bengal University of
Technology after him," Ms Banerjee in a tweet said.
In another tweet, Ms Banerjee said, ' Tribute to social activist and politician Acharya
Kripalani on his birth anniversary.
The freedom fighter and visionary, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, was responsible not
only for streamlining the education system in the country but also foreseeing the start
of the first ever Indian Institute of Technology, IIT, in India in 1951.
He was also responsible for setting up of The Central Institute of Education, Delhi
which later became the Department of Education of Delhi University.
He was the primary propagator of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and
Faculty of Technology of Delhi University and a founder of Jamila Milia Islamia
University.
While Kripalani contributed much in the freedom struggle and afterwards, he is
best known for holding the chair of the President of the Indian National Congress
during the turbulent phase of 1947.
Kripalani started off his career as a teacher and educationist but soon gave up
the same to take part in the freedom struggle.
He actively took part in the Gandhi-initiated Non-Cooperation Movement, Salt
Satyagraha, Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit India Movement.
