HP: Arrest of DHS, purchase of medical supplies under scanner

Shimla, May 23(UNI) Following the arrest of Director Health Service on corruption charges, the state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau is probing the purchase of medical supplies made by the directorate of health services in the last four months, a member of investigating unit confirmed on Saturday.
SP Ms Shalini Agnihotri from the bureau's special investigation unit said that various medical equipments and supplies were procured from multiple vendors spread across several states. We have reasons to believe that there was corruption in the procurement of various supplies from February on wards," she said .
Dr AK Gupta, director of health services, was arrested on allegations of bribery on Wednesday after an audio clip went viral among a network of people and also reached bureau officials. He was questioned for several hours by the bureau before being placed under arrest, ADGP Mr Anurag Garg said.
Officials believe it was Gupta who was demanding the money to favour some people involved in selling of medical supplies to the directorate.
"We then verified what was being said on the tape through our sources and found out that the discussion related to the bribery was genuine," Ms Agnihotri said.
She said that investigating officials are now scrutinizing various documents and property papers which were seized following the inspection of the directorate's offices and Gupta's residence.
Mr Gupta's counsel applied for anticipatory bail in the sessions court but withdrew it after the arguments, officials said. "Following his discharge from the hospital, we will be seeking his police custody in order to question him," said the SP.
Dr Gupta has been booked under sections 7 and 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and has also been suspended from service.
In the 43-second audio clip, two men can be heard discussing dissatisfaction with a bank branch and then talking about the delivery of Rs 5 lakh. One man is heard saying, "Leke aa raha hun samaan apka ji," to which the other replies "thik hai le ao. Kitna le aye". The first man replies,"Sir aapne 5 lakh bola tha janab," and the second man replies, "thik hai le ao."
