Anti-CAA protests: Police forcibly removes protestors in Varanasi

Varanasi, Jan 23 (UNI) Police used force to disperse a section of protesters to vacate Benia Bagh ground here, where a section of women and others were trying to stage dharna against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizenship (NRC) on Thursday.

It was reported that some anti-social elements involved in stone-pelting when the police were trying to disperse the protestors.

Soon, heavy police forces from various police stations rushed there along with Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel.

District Magistrate (DM) Kaushal Raj Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhakar Chaudhary and other senior officers rushed there to take the stock of the situation.

According to the district administration, as Section 144 is still in force in the city, no one can stage dharna or protests without seeking prior permission.

The photographs of all present there were taken and strict action will be taken against them after identification, DM said.
Benia Bagh Maidan, a historic site in the heart of the city surrounded by Muslim-dominated areas, wore a deserted look after the police action.
The ground is also witnessed similar protests earlier in December, when the police arrested 56 persons including social activists Ekta Shekhar and Ravi Shekhar, residents of Adarsh Nagar colony in Mahmoorganj here, had angered local people.
Shekhar couple's one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Champak’s separation from her parents was making headlines when Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted about the child.
The sit-in protests against the citizenship laws which began in Shaheen Bagh in Delhi, have caught on in a big way in the state including this Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency.
