Always wanted to make a period film, emergency is a good topic: Madhur Bhandarkar

New Delhi, Jul 15 (UNI) As his latest film 'Indu Sarkar', set in the backdrop of emergency period in 1975-1977, faces controversy, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar says that he had always wanted to make a period film.
Talking to UNI, Madhur, who was in the capital last evening along with the lead actress Kirti Kulhari, veteran singer composer Bappi Lahiri and Miss India Tourism Ishika Taneja to launch the film's new song "Dilli ki Raat", said,"I wanted to make a period film and felt that it would be a very nice thing to make a film on the backdrop of emergency and what exactly happened during those times.
" The Page 3 and Fashion filmmaker said it is a very beautiful subject.
"Its emotional and not a political film.
But the nature of the backdrop is political," he said.
When asked what made him choose such a subject, the filmmaker said,"nobody has made a film on emergency's backdrop.
People are not aware of emergency and I feel today's generation and youth needs to know exactly what happened behind the emergency and the life over there.
What events exactly had happened.
I like making films that are hard hitting and realistic.
" On asking whether the today's generation will learn something from the movie, Madhur said," Today's youth will definitely learn.
I am not a giver of encyclopedia on emergency with 2 hrs and 9 mins movie, but definitely a summary of emergency.
" On the controversy generated by the film with several sections raising objections to its content, Madhur said, "there are many documentaries made on emergency, books are also written on that period, but no objections have been ever made on those people.
So why not a film.
The freedom of expression that is for the documentary maker or the book writer, why is that freedom not available for a filmmaker.
' On some leaders of the Congress raising their objections to the film, the filmmaker claimed that he did not set out to make a “political” film.
"The film has nothing to do with the politics, its about the life of Indu.
This is not a biopic, not a documentary but a fictional story, I have used the backdrop of emergency.
I have used the political scenario of that time period.
But the film is not at all political," he said.
Madhur said the movie is the journey of a girl.
'The fictional story revolves around Indu, the protagonist who is an orphan.
How she gains confidence and becomes a rebel,' he said.
Asked whether it is a real character, Madhur said,"No.
It is not a real character, just a name taken.
It is a fictional story, just the backdrop is of Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi government.
Only few incidents are inspired by true events happened during Emergency.
Only 30 per cent of the sequences in the film are based on reality while 70 per cent of the film is fictional,' the filmmaker said.
On the cuts suggested by the Censor Board, the filmmaker said that the cuts, if carried out, will dilute the impact of the film.
He said the Censor Board had raised objection to use of 17 words in the film.
Asserting that they would not carry out the cuts suggested by the CBFC, the filmmaker said,'we will decide on our future course of action after consulting our legal team.
They will sent me a letter and then I will sit with my legal team and discuss whether we will take it to a revising committee or in Delhi tribunal.
Then the final decision will be taken.
'.
Responding to charges of being close to the Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Madhur said,'if that were true why would the Censor Board raise objections to the content of the film.
The board has asked me to remove words like 'RSS', 'Communists', 'Kishore Kumar' and Jai Prakash Narayan' from the film.
' On those raising objections to the film, he said that all these people were expressing their objections after just watching the film's trailer.
'People are raising objections to the film after just watching its trailer.
All these people should watch the film first before raising their objections,'he said.
About the song launch "Dilli ki Raat", Madhur said, "It is a promotional track.
I have always been a fan of RD Burman so its a tribute to him.
Anu Malik has composed it and shot on Bappi Lahiri and Miss World Tourism Ishika Taneja.
Its not in the film and basically for the promotion.
The audience can see shots of the movie in the song.
Its a very interesting retro music, not an item song but a driving track.
" Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, 'Indu Sarkar' is a human story about a woman who stands up for her rights, against the backdrop of the Emergency.
The story is told through a female protagonist, this time Kriti Kulhari’s stammering poet Indu, who becomes involved with an underground movement against the Indira Gandhi regime and is mentored by a character played by Anupam Kher.
Indu Sarkar, also featuring Neil Nitin Mukesh, is slated to release on July 28.
