Hegseth has faced scrutiny since The Washington Post reported on Friday that he issued a verbal order to “kill everybody” aboard alleged drug boats prior to the September 2 strike, the first known U.S. boat strike in Latin American international waters. Two survivors clinging to the burning vessel hit by the initial strike were reportedly killed in the follow-up attack.
