US gains 2.5 mln jobs in May despite pandemic : Labor Dept

Washington, Jun 5 (UNI)The United States Labor Department in its monthly employment report on Friday claimed that the world's largest economy added 2.5 million jobs in the month of May despite business shutdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
An employment report, as reported by news agency Sputnik, claimed that the unemployment rate currently stands at 13.3 per cent compared to 14.7 per cent just a month ago.
The labor department had reported 20.5 million job losses in the month of April. May's encouraging report is contrary to what many economists had predicted, some had foreseen a job loss of around 8 million or more for May which would have taken the unemployment rate near to 20 per cent. The report claimed that the number of unemployed persons on temporary layoff decreased by 2.7 million in May.
