Ottawa, Oct 22 (UNI) Justin Trudeau on Tuesday won a second term as Canada’s prime minister in the country’s federal election, but failed to gain an absolute majority which means he would lead a minority government and depend on other parties to govern.
According to the national broadcaster CBC, Liberals were leading or victorious in 146 out of 304 electoral districts by about 2230 hrs local time on .Trudeau needed to win 170 seats to secure a second majority government.
'We seek hardship for none and prosperity for all, and if we unite around these common goals, I know we can achieve them,' the Liberal Party leader told cheering supporters in Montreal, as qouted by the Gaurdian.
Mr Trudeau ahead of the vote, polls showed him neck-and-neck with Scheer but with neither of the main parties reaching the number of seats needed for a parliamentary majority, Canada is headed towards a minority government, and the Liberal party was forced to co-operate with smaller left-of-centre parties to govern.
Such a deal will leave the leftwing NDP and the Bloc holding the balance of power a minority government. The most likely ally for Trudeau is Singh, who has made a commitment to fighting climate change and funding health care key requires for co-operation from the NDP.
