Language embodies culture, values, morals and traditional knowledge: VP

New Delhi, July 15 (UNI) Language embodies culture, values, morals and traditional knowledge and all state governments should make their respective mother tongues as compulsory subject in their schools, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said here on Sunday.
Addressing the gathering at the Founder’s Day Celebrations of Andhra Education Society and also at the virtual-inauguration of new school building at Andhra Education Society School of R K Puram​, here, Mr Naidu said, "We are the inheritors of great culture and heritage and respecting elders and teachers, empathy for all living creatures and reverence for nature is in the DNA of every Indian".
Stressing on importance of language, he said one could learn as many languages as possible, but should never neglect his mother tongue. That was why preservation of language essential to conserve the broader cultural aspects of a civilization.
Mr Naidu said that culture of a region represented its civilization, ethos, wisdom, morals, customs and social norms. Mutual understanding and respect for each other’s culture and learning other Indian languages would strengthen the unity and integrity of the country.
He also appealed to all state governments to make their respective mother tongues a compulsory subject in their schools.
Hailing the achievements of Dr Durga Bhai Deshmukh in pioneering women education, Mr Naidu said that recollecting memories of great souls would inspire younger generation to work for the development of the country.
He further said that she was an inspiration for every one as a freedom fighter, lawyer, social worker, educationist and politician.
It was a great tribute that her birth anniversary was being celebrated as the Founder’s Day of Andhra Education Society, he added.
He said that Dr Durgabai Deshmukh was instrumental in setting up of many hospitals, colleges, nursing homes and vocational centres for women and she recognised the importance of education for women to overcome many problems.
Mr Naidu said, she was a member of the Constituent Assembly, member of Planning Commission, founding president of the Central Social Welfare Board and her contribution to the Delhi Blind Relief Association was always remembered.
Present on the occasion were Mayor of South Delhi, Narendra Chawla and other dignitaries.
