Kolkata, Jan 4 (UNI) Two policemen, including a sub-inspector, were killed and three others were critically injured when a goods laden heavy truck slammed a patrolling van from rear in West Bengal's Howrah district, official sources said on Thursday.
Sub-Inspector of West Bengal Police Sujoy Das and Home Guard Palash Samanta died on the spot and the injured policemen were shifted to two separate hospitals. Two of the critically wounded cops have been shifted to a city hospital after their health condition deteriorated, sources added.
The accident happened early on Thursday when the patrolling van which was parked on a side of a Kolkata bound lane on NH 16 (Mumbai Road), the truck slammed the four-wheeler from the back splitting apart the
roof of the police van and hurling all five occupants on the metal road.
The cops were all from the Bagnan police station. The incident took place on Varunada Mumbai Road in Bagnan.
The truck was traveling at high speed from Kolaghat on way to Kolkata. The truck fled. On receiving the report, the reinforcement from Bagnan rushed and rescued the victims and took them to Uluberia Hospital.
The doctors declared Sujoy (45) and Palash (30) dead.
