Barbados, Jan 25 (UNI) Riding on Jason Holder’s double-hundred (202*) and Shane Dowrich’s ton (116*), West Indies has set a mammoth target of 628 runs against England on Day three of the first Test in Barbados.
At stumps on Friday, England was 56-0 with Rory Burns (39) and Keaton Jennings (11) at the crease.
The hosts resumed their second innings on 127/6, leading by 339 after bowling English team out for 77 on the second day.
The West Indies skipper hit his first double-hundred. It was third double ton made by a Number eight in Tests, and the first in the second innings of a game. It was also the second-highest score by a West Indian captain against England.
In their second innings, Holder and Dowrich stitched together an unbeaten partnership of 295 runs for the seventh wicket, the third-highest for the seventh wicket in Test history.
The visitors stand minimal chance of batting two full days to force a draw, despite the Kensington Oval pitch having flattened out compared to a remarkable Day two on which 18 wickets fell.
On the other hand, the impressive West Indies will be trying to take 10 wickets to get a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.
Holder is only the second West Indies captain to hit a double-hundred against the English team, after former captain Brian Lara, who made 375 and 400 not out.
During his double hundred, Holder hit eight sixes - the most by a West Indies batsman against England in a Test innings.
