Violence erupts during BJP youth wing's protest against power tariff hike

Kolkata, Sep 11 (UNI) The downtown city on Wednesday witnessed violence during the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s youth wing-sponsored protect march against hike of power tariff.
Water cannons and teargas shells were used to ward off the agitators demanding a cut in power tariff in West Bengal.
Hundreds of saffron workers marched towards the headquarters of Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation, (CESC) demanding a reduction in the existing power tariff in the state.
Police used water cannons and lobbed teargas shells to disperse protesters in which some BJP supporters sustained injuries.
Several BJP supporters were taken into police custody.
The leaders spearheading the rally included MP Locket Charterjee, party general secreatries Raju Banerjee and Sayantan Basu.
Tension ran high in the Central Avenue area as police tried to pacify the protesters.
