Villagers, fishermen, environmentalists open front against Greenfield South Gujarat port

Ahmedabad, Dec 29 (UNI) A meeting of heads of a dozen coastal villages of Valsad district held yesterday evening in Maroli resolved to launch an agitation against the proposed Greenfield port at Nargol as it would endanger the fragile ecology and deprive thousands of fishermen of their livelihood.
The meeting, presided over by Maroli gram panchayat sarpanch Rajesh Keni and attended by leaders of fishing community, Mangela, discussed the adverse effect on the environment and livelihood of farmers, fishermen and other inhabitants of scores of coastal villages along the Arabian Sea if the the Greenfield port is built at Nargol.
Senior Parsi community leader K K Mistry, a retired merchant navy captain, appealed to the villagers to oppose the project notwithstanding the lucrative price they would be offered for their land by the developers of the port.
