US, India to hold talks on defence industry ties

New Delhi, May 31 (UNI) US Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs R Clarke Cooper will be here next week for talks on expanding India-US security cooperation and tapping opportunities for American defence industry.
The US has recognised India as a Major Defense Partner in 2016. The designation allows India to access more advanced and sensitive technologies from the US at par with that of America's closest allies and partners.
In the last 10 years, two-way defence trade has risen to $15 billion.
Cooper, who will come to New Delhi soon after attending the May 31-June 2 Asia Security Summit in Singapore, will hold talks on defence cooperation and peacekeeping -- two key areas of the rapidly growing US-India partnership as envisioned in the Trump administration's Indo-Pacific Strategy.
He will then move to Sri Lanka and meet government officials and think tank experts to discuss security, counter-terrorism, peacekeeping, clearance of landmines and unexploded ordnance, and other areas of mutual interest, the State Department said in a statement.
