UPASI, CCPA to organise 'India International Tea Convention' in Sep

Bengaluru, May 2 (UNI) The United Planers' Association of Southern
India (UPASI) under the aegis of The Consultative Committee of
Plantation Asociation (CCPA) will organise a three day 'India
International Tea Convention' (IITC) in Udhakamandalam from
September 22.
Briefing reporters here, UPASI president and Chairman of IITC N
Dharmaraj said more than 500 delegates,including those from the US,
China, Iran, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and other countries, would
participate in the three-day convention which carries the theme
''Let's 'Tea'm UP For Sustainability''.
''The theme highlights the Indian tea industry which is driven by
elements of sustainability such as sustainable agricultural
practices, ethical and fair employee engagement, safety at work
place and product safety, livelihood issues of community, besides
suporting environment,'' he said.
The convention is aimed at reinforcing the salient and unique
features of India tea to the tea fraternity across the world. India
is the largest producer of black tea in the world. It would also
provide opportunity to various buyers in the global tea market to
visit this one-stop destination for procuring wide range of quality
teas, he said.
He said the Tea Board and the producers have been working towards
exploring new markets like Australia, France and SouthEast Asia
besides India's traditional tea export destinations like Russia,
UAE, Pakistan, Iran, USA and UK.
The sessions during the convention include steps to be taken to
popularise new format of tea, value addition to Indian tea,
popularising bottled tea which is emering as a favourite drink among
the youth, sessions on markets and a deep study of the domestic
market.
Out of nearly 80 per cent of the 1200 million kg (2015 figures)
Tea produced in India, nearly 80 per cent is consumed within
the country and the rest exported. During the last calender year,
the tea industry with a size of Rs 17,500 crore had exported nearly
Rs 4100 crore worth tea. Tea gardens in South India had produced 240
million kgs of tea last year of which 90 million kgs was exported.
The convention would also witness organisation of Exhibition and
presentation of Golden Leaf India Awards.
