Agartala, Aug 1 (UNI) Tripura Biotechnology Board (TBB) has launched an ambitious project to cultivate 15000 Sabri banana plants in next three years catering to a huge demand in the state because of its fancy taste and nutrition, said deputy chief minister also, holding the charge of Science and Technology, Jishnu Dev Varma.
He was instrumental in the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among TBB, Department of Horticulture and Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) Tripura Centre yesterday to achieve the target set for production under the project. Besides, TBB would raise tissue culture nursery for Sabri banana, which would be distributed among the farmers for large scale production of the banana variety.
“Despite having a conducive environment, farming atmosphere, and institutional infrastructure, Tripura has not yet been able to start Sabri banana cultivation at a commercial scale. Due to a shortage of supply, Sabri banana is being sold at a minimum price of Rs 10/- per piece in the sate. Now under the project not only would the production be increased but also look into the quality and taste of bananas,” Dev Varma observed.
