Treat OBC-reserved seats as general category for local body polls: PHC

Patna, Oct 4 (UNI) Patna High Court (PHC) on Tuesday directed the Bihar State Election Commission to re-notify the ongoing local body polls, treating seats reserved for OBCs as general category.
A division bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice S Kumar issued the directive to the State Election Commission after hearing an urgent petition as asked by the Supreme Court, taking note of the fact that local body elections in Bihar were in progress. The petition is related to challenging the notification of the State Election Commission treating some seats as reserved for OBCs. It was pointed out in the petition that reserving some seats for OBC candidates was violation of earlier guidelines issued by the Supreme Court for making provisions for reservations for the OBC category in local body elections.
The division bench of the court directed State Election Commission to carry out the local body elections only by immediately re-notifying the seats reserved for OBC category, treating them as general category constituencies.The bench also clarified that
