Training prog titled ‘Product and Design Development in Handmade Fabrics’ organised

Kolkata, Oct 23 (UNI) A training programme titled ‘Product and Design Development in
Handmade Fabrics’ was organized with Exim Bank’s support, held on Friday for ten
experienced artisans of the Urmul Marusthali Bunkar Vikas Samiti (UMBVS), Phalodi,
Rajasthan, for a period of 30 days.
UMBVS is a registered, not-for-profit organization established in 1989, having its head
office at Phalodi town in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, for the welfare of weavers in the Great Thar
Desert of Western Rajasthan.
Ms Ritu Suri, a textile designer from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT,
New Delhi) who herself is skilled at handmade textiles and fabrics is conducting the training
programme.
On the launch, David Rasquinha, MD, India Exim Bank said, "EXIM bank is trying to support
weavers to help them export their products internationally. Through the training program, we
are hopeful they learn how to innovatively make their products using new design and techniques."
He also acknowledged the bountiful efforts of UMBVS in the socio-economic upliftment of the weavers and wished the programme all success.
The artisans, members of UMBVS, have a unique technique and skills to work inside the
pit-looms which are mastered only by a few.
The training programme would consult weavers on product and design development in
handmade fabrics.
The specialised training would help revive this fading art, provide them with an opportunity
to gain exposure to innovative ideas in modern weaving techniques and designs and enhance
their scope of income generation.
