All senior officials of East Coat Railway (ECR) have been camping at the site of the Bridge that got damaged due to unprecedented floods.
General Manager Umesh Singh, accompanied by Principal Chief Engineer of East Coast Railway, personally inspected the site early this morning.
Water level has receded in the afternoon compared to the position of last night.
Today, professional Railway Teams from Visakhapatnam, including Divers, went to the spot of the two Bridges and checked the Down Line Railway Bridge and its fitness. It was seen that in one of the Piers (Pillars) of the Bridge, there is erosion of sand/mud (technical term-SCOURING) which has led to erosion of the sand bed. In spite of incremental weather, the Railway Engineers at the site have been trying their best to unload sufficient quantity of sand bags, boulders and ballast. These are being put at the base/bottom of the Piers for strengthening as the sand bed has eroded due to the floods.
General Manager Shri Umesh Singh is personally camping at the site with Divisional Railway Manager/Sambalpur and Principal Heads of the Departments. It is expected that the restoration efforts, presently in progress on war footing in spite of bad weather, will be as fruit and the train operations on the DOWN LINE Bridge will resume at the earliest by tomorrow, if weather conditions do not worsen.
Principal Chief Engineer and Chief Bridge Engineer of East Coast Railway are guiding the restoration work of the Bridge. Bridges are critical assets and have a lot of bearing on Safety of Trains and passengers. As the present floods are unprecedented and with forecast of heavy rainfall in the coming days,
ECR will not take any chances and will not compromise on safety aspects, even if restoration work get slightly delayed.
The Bridge is expected to be made ready for traffic by tomorrow and all trains between Theruvali and Singapur Road will pass on this single DOWN LINE Bridge. Hence, extra caution and safety measures are being adopted.
