T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka thrash Ireland by 70 runs; qualify for Super 12 stage

Abu Dhabi, Oct 20 (UNI) Half centuries by Wanindu Hsaranga and Prathum Nissanka followed by disciplined Sri Lankan bowling performance saw the side reach the Super 12 stage of T20 World Cup as they defeated Ireland by 70 runs in Group A of the first round at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday.
Batting first, Sri Lanka put 171/7 on the board with the help of Hasaranga’s (71) and Nissanka’s (61) efforts in the middle order. Their bowlers then bundled out the Irish for 108 in 18.3 overs as Maheesh Theekshana (3/17), Lahiru Kumara (2/22) and Chamika Karunaratne (2/27) starred with the ball.
Ireland, on the other hand, will have another shot at making it to the Super 12 as they face Namibia in a do-or-die clash on Friday. The side, however, needs to figure out how to make the most out of a good start as they reduced Lankans at 8/3 inside the Power play.
