New Delhi, Apr 12 (UNI) President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday appointed Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra as the new Chief Election Commissioner, the Ministry of Law and Justice said.
Mr Chandra will assume charge from April 13, the Ministry said in a statement adding that a notification in this regard has been issued by the Legislative Department.
Prior to Mr Chandra, Mr Sunil Arora was the Chief Election Commissioner whose term ended today i.e. on April 12. Mr Chandra would demit office next year on May 14.
Mr Chandra was appointed as the Election Commissioner on February 14, 2019 before the Lok Sabha elections. Earlier he served as the chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) before joining the Election Commission.
