Sri Lankan Naval forces strike again, arrests 6 Indian fishermen
Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu Jul 4 (UNI) Continuing its aggressive stance against the Indian fishermen, the Sri Lankan maritime forces arrested six more Indian fishermen and seized a fishing dhow on the alleged charges of cross border fishing. Fisheries department officials said that according to a communiqué they have received, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SCG) arrested six country boat fishermen, hailing from Pamban coastal hamlet here for poaching in Sri Lankan waters north-west of Kudiramalai Point, this evening. The SCG arrested five fishermen and seized their mechanized fishing boat on Saturday. The arrested fishermen along with the fishing dhow were handed over to the Puttalam Assistant Director of Fisheries for onward action. Although Chief Minister Ms.J.Jayalalithaa is continuously urging the Centre to take concrete steps to prevent repetition of attacks on innocent fishermen, incarceration and impounding of fishing boats, it seems there was no end to the atrocities unleashed against Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Naval forces, said P.Seshu Raja, Secretary of Tamil Nadu Coastal Mechanized Boats Fishermen Association. The total number of Indian fishermen arrested by SCG after the beginning of new fishing season rose to 40. UNI GSM cs 1927
