Six candidates in fray for lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat

Aizawl, Mar 27 (UNI) As the deadline for filing nominations for the Mizoram Lok Sabha seat drew to a close on Wednesday, six candidates, including an independent contender, stepped into the electoral arena and announced state election department officials.
The upcoming polls for the Mizoram Lok Sabha seat, scheduled for April 19 as part of the first phase of the general elections across the nation, coincide with assembly elections in four other states.
Lalbiakzama, the nominee of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), who filed his nominations on Wednesday, emphasised the preservation of Mizoram's cultural heritage and religious traditions as his top priority upon filing his nomination papers. The former Mizoram police service (MPS) officer, who retired as the state home secretary, voiced concerns about the potential implications of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on tribal communities, stressing the need for vigilant representation in Parliament.

At least 650 houses damaged by hailstorm so far

Aizawl, Apr 28(UNI) At least 650 homes including 51 houses in Tualpui and Vanka villages of northeastern Khawza distrrict have been ravaged by rain accompanied by massive hailstorm and gusty wind in Mizora on Saturday morning
Sources said 24 houses houses have been destroyed in Tualpui and 27 houses damaged in Vankal village when a heavy hailstorm hit the two villages at around 2 AM on Saturday morning.
