Sensex ends at 1-wk-low of 33,053.04 pts as rise in retail

inflation, sluggish industrial growth spook investors Mumbai, Dec 13 (UNI) The benchmark index of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) fell in a highly volatile session on Wednesday by 174.95 points to end at a one-week-low of 33,053.04 amid concerns over rise in retail inflation and sluggish industrial growth as well as
outcome of the meet of the central banks in Europe and the US on interest rates.
The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) too declined by 47.20 points to 10,192.95.
The double whammy of the spike in consumer price index (CPI) inflation in November to a 15-month-high and slow down of industrial output growth to a 3-month-low of 2.2 per cent in October spooked the investors. Also, almost a 100 per cent certainty that US Federal Reserve will hike rates later today is likely to have put pressure
on the equity market.
In a highly volatile trade, the Sensex, which had tumbled by 466 points in last couple of days, went up a tad by 2 points to 33,229.73 in the morning. Then, it advanced by 137 points to touch a day's high of 33,404.26 in intra day. It then shaved off the gains and lost by 239 points to end below 33K-level at 32,988.82, a day's
low, before closing at 33,053.04, sliding by 174.95 points as compared to its last close.
The Nifty recorded day's high and low at 10,296.55 and 10,169.85 points, respectively.
The sectoral indices like Realty, Metal, Capital Goods, Industrials and Health Care put pressure on the market for another day. Scrips of Tata Motors DVR, Cipla, Adani Ports and SBIN edged lower till the end of the session.
Realty and metal stocks declined. Blue-chip shares of L&T, Infosys and State Bank of India dropped.
Among secondary indices, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index lost 0.84 per cent. The Small-Cap index fell 0.81 pc. Both the indices underperformed the Sensex.
The market breadth was weaker on BSE, as 1,776 shares declined against 853 advanced and 138 were unchanged.
The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 4,867.20 crore, compared with a turnover of Rs 4,466.90 crore registered during the previous trading session.
