Saurabh erases Jr world record,  Abhishek misses Tokyo quota

New Delhi, Sep 6 (UNI) Asian Games champion Saurabh Chaudhary smashed his own junior world record while Abhishek Verma but missed a Tokyo 2020 quota place on offer, as India added five medals on day five of 52ndISSF World shooting Championship in Changwon, Korea on Thursday.

In the 10 m Air Pistol Junior event 16-year old Saurabh Chaudhary , shot brilliantly , tallying 581 to qualify for the final in third spot and then shot a superb 245.5 in the final to win the Gold, erasing his own record score of 243.7, achieved at the Junior World Cup in June.

He beat the same rival as he had done in Suhl Germany, Lim Hojin of orea who tried hard but had to settle for Silver with an effort of 243.1, a clear 2.4 behind the relentless Indian.

However in the senior Men’s 10m Pistol, Abhishekh Verma shot a fine qualification round of 583 and was placed third in the eight-man individual final where he shot 118 to finish eight..

India also picked up two more medals from the event. Saurabh’s teammate Arjun Singh Cheema, crowned the world junior 50m Pistol champion a few days back, settled for Bronze here with a score of 218.0.

Saurabh and Arjun also combined with Anmol Jain to clinch the Team Silver in the event with an effort of 1730, which was short of the Gold medal winning Korean team by two which was also a Junior Team World record.

In senior 10m Air Pistol however, team of Abhishek Verma, Om Prakash Mitharval and Shahzar Rizvi claimed the Team Silver in the event with a combined score of 1738.

India also bagged a Silver medal in the Junior Trap Team competition with Aman Elahi, Vivaan Kapoor and Manavaditya Rathore shooting a combined score of 348 to finish second behind Australia.

Aman shot the best among the trio, his 118 in qualification taking him to the six-man final. He ended sixth. Aman had to also overcome a four-man shoot-off to get to the final.

At the end of the India India had total tally of14 medals which includes four Gold, six Silver and four Bronze medals. They lie in third position in the medals tally behind Korea and Russia.

Other results:

In 10 M air pistol Om Prakash Mitharval shot 579 and Shahzar Rizvi shot 576 in qualification to finish 18th and 30th respectively..

In Junior trap, Vivaan Kapoor shot 117 and Manavaditya Rathore shot 113 out 125 to finish 9th and 17th respectively

In women’s trap , Shreyasi Singh (110 ) Seema Tomar (108) and Varsha Verman (107) finished 34th, 41st and 42nd respectively.

Team finished 8thwith a combined score of 325
