Satyarup Siddhanta scales Mt Damavand in Iran

New Delhi, Sep 16 (UNI) Mountaineer Satyarup Siddhanta and Mousumi Khatua created history by climbing Asia's highest volcanic peak Mount Damavand.
Mount Damavand is the highest peak in Iran and also a potentially active volcano.
The expedition team comprised of three members – Siddhanta, Mousumi and Bhaswati Chatterjee, according to a release. The trio left for Iran on September 6.
On September 10 morning, around 0600 hrs, the trio started their expedition. Around 1.45 pm (IST), Siddhanta and Khatua scaled the peak in Iran while the third member Chatterjee decided to stay back at Camp 3, after advancing till 4600 meters.

At an elevation of 5609 metres, Mt Damavand is known for its Sulphur discharge near its peak which can cause irreparable damage if exposed for a longer duration.
The team had to scale the summit within a very short span of time to avoid the Sulphur exposure related hazards.

This is the fourth volcanic summit for Siddhanta. The 35-year-old is now targeting scaling three more volcanic peaks by January 2019.

Robert Swan, the polar legend, advised Satyarup to keep inspiring young Indians with his amazing feat of dreaming big and winning over personal limitations.
He also emphasised on empowering women of this country to break the artificial barriers and champion the cause of equality.

Apart from being an accomplished mountaineer, Siddhanta is on course to bag a prestigious world record.
He has not only climbed Mt Everest, but also skied the last degree to the South Pole, covering a distance of 111 km over 6 days, carrying a 50kg sledge.

He is now in the last lap of climbing the highest volcanoes of each of the continents known as climbing the 7 volcanic summits.

If successful, Siddhanta will become the youngest person to complete all the seven volcanic summits that is Mount Sidley, Mount Giluwe, Mount Damavand, Pico de Orizaba, Mount Elbrus, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Ojos del Salado.
