Sangli, Nov 8 (UNI) The turmeric produced in Sangli, known for its fine quality and texture, has now got the Geographical indication(GI) tag. The decision was announced by Geographical Indication Registery office, Chennai.
Ganesh Hingmire, a member of a farmers group, namely 'Shivraj turmeric producers' based in Shirdhon village of the district was trying since 2013 to get the GI tag for 'Sangli's Halad' (turmeric).
His tireless efforts become successful when the spice recognised as a 'unique' product all over the world and also a leverage to the turmeric business in Sangli.
According to World Intellectual Property Organization(WIPO),GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
Mr Hingmire applied for GI tag on the claims that Sangli turmeric is stocked under land in specific conditions, due to which the color of turmeric turns saffron-yellow. Also, the content level of Curcumin, a medicinal compound present in turmeric, increases by two per cent due to the preservation method.
The GI Registration office agreed to the said claims, after thorough verification and stamped the Sangli-produced turmeric with GI tag.
Mr Hingmire received a GI certificate from Chennai office through e-mail.
