Ranatunga appointed Sri Lanka Sports Council chairman

Colombo, Aug 10 (UNI) Former Sri Lanka cricket captain and ex-MP Arjuna Ranatunga on Wednesday appointed as the chairman of the country's National Sports Council.

Ranatunga's appointment for the post was done by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe at an event held at the Torrington National Sports Council.
The ex-MP of United National Party (UNP) said that the minister made a request from him to head the National Sports Council, Newswire reported.
Previously, the Council was headed by former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardena, but he and his committee resigned soon after sports minister Namal Rajapaksa quit amidst the country’s political and economic crisis.
The 15-member council's task is to advise the Sport Minister on matters leading to the development of sports in the country.
The National Sports Council, which is a national body, is appointed under the Sports Law of 1973 (Section 25 Clause 4).
