Junagadh, Jul 21 (UNI) Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by a troupe of party leaders including Kumari Shailja and Gurudas Kamat, today visited Mota Samadhiala village of Una taluka in Gir-Somnath district to express sympathy and solidarity with the four Dalit youths, who were beaten up by cow vigilantes a few days ago, triggering state wide protests. Mr Gandhi, who arrived here by road from Diu airport spent a little over half an hour with the victims’ family members. He also saw the wounds of one of the victims by requesting him to remove his shirt. He had tea with the victim’s family. Ms Shailja, a woman Congress leader from Dalit community, Gujarat party in-charge Mr Kamat, state Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki, former state president of Congress Siddharth Patel and other leaders accompanied Mr Gandhi. Mr Gandhi watched the video clip showing how the four Dalit youths were tied to a vehicle, beaten up and dragged to a police station. The video, which had gone viral on social network, was responsible for the wide spread violent reaction from the Dalit community throughout the state. Mr Gandhi shared his phone number with the victim’s family with the request to keep him posted if they faced any threat or reprisal from the accused booked for committing atrocity on the Dalit youths. A boy member of the victim’s family, who played interpreter during the interaction, told journalists that Mr Gandhi assured them of all possible help. “He heard our case and other problems and assured us all possible help”, he added. Gujarat Congress announced to extend Rs five lakh relief to the victims. Former Union Minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Praful Patel, who too visited the village today also announced an assistance of Rs two lakh for them terming it a small assistance from him and his party. Mr Patel suspected a larger conspiracy behind the state-wide violence that erupted to damage the social fabric of the country and malign the image of a progressive Gujarat. Mr Patel termed the incident of beating up of Dalit youths as unfortunate and shameful. He charged the Gujarat government of delaying action against the perpetrators of violence against members of the Dalit community. “Even the Chief Minister visited the victims as late as ten days after the incident,” he pointed out. “The violent protests are further maligning the already maligned image of Gujarat” Mr Patel said. Mr Patel is scheduled to go to Rajkot to inquire about the condition of those admitted to hospital who consumed poison to protest the Una incident. UNI ND JW PY 1515
