Punjab pigs are not welcome in Nagaland

Kohima, Sep 18 (UNI) The move to import live pigs worth Rs 200 crore annually to Nagaland from Punjab by the Department of Underdeveloped Areas (DUDA) has not been well-taken by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services and the Pig Farmers Association of Nagaland.

A delegation of DUDA Nagaland led by its adviser N Bongkhao Konyak and principal secretary L Kire had recently visited Punjab and held meeting with Punjab Government for likely import of around 8,000 pigs per month to Nagaland. Being one of the highest meat consuming states, Nagaland is currently facing shortfall of 40 per cent of meat products out of total requirement of about Rs 400 crore annually, said director of animal husbandry and veterinary services Dr. Aomangyang Walling, while interacting with a section of mediain Dimapur yesterday.
