Proposed new US Visa regime still hazy: Infosys officials

Bengaluru, Jan 13 (UNI) India's second biggest software services exporter Infosys today said the proposed new norms curtailing H1B visas in the United States was still unclear, but there were other ways to drive the delivery of IT services, like using of Artificial Intelligence to improve the quality. Speaking to reporters after announcing the third quarter results for FY16 when the city-based IT giant reported Rs 17,273 crore revenues and a net profit of Rs 3708 crore, Company CEO and Managing Director Vishal Sikka banked on the 'background' of US President elect Donald Trump, who he said was an innovator, entrepreneur and a businessman. 'We expect the new administration (in US) will be business friendly. Our long term focus is to ensure that we continue to be innovative and deliver services based on what our clients' needs,' he said. According to latest three month figures ending December 31, Infosys earned 62 per cent of its revenues from North America, most of it coming from the US Market. US President designate Donald Trump had promised to end the 'misuse' of Visa programmes by companies to undercut American workers, referring to an incident that involved Indian companies and IT professionals on H1-B visas. Dr Sikka said Infosys expect there will be changes in the policies, but the new administration starts next week and it is too early to tell the nature of policies that will be adopted and the company will have to address that. 'Technology has a way, next generation collaboration technology can really have a significant impact on how our global workforce can come together and it is an integral part of our strategy to become less dependent of Visas and become more local in our approach,' he said. Infosys CFO M D Ranganath said the bill about restricting H1B, that is talked about, was one year ago and there were many more bills during the previous administration as well, with various proposals. 'This bill comes back after it was introduced in July last year. So typically what we see is long legislative process, amendments, chances etc. But finally what happens on the bill, what proposals be adopted into law is uncertain at this stage. We are closely monitoring what is going to emerge,' he said. Mr Ranganath however said Infosys had a long standing programme of hiring locals on its onsite projects and it will continue doing it providing availability of skilled workers. 'We have hiring locals for past many quarters and complying with local regulations.' He however said the relief proposed in the US bill (that a IT worker be paid 1,00,000 dollar and the exemption on post-graduate degree is done away with), will be determined on 'demand and supply' situation. 'The market force is determined what is determining in a certain area, like what it (salaries) is in Silicon Valley,' he said. Newly appointed Deputy Chief Operating Officer Ravikumar S, who was heading the global delivery organisation, also said the Visa legislation process may take time. 'Inspite that, Infosys will respect its word that it will focus on local hiring. We have been doing it for many quarters now. We only supplement capabilities to what we have locally. Local hiring (in foreign countries) will strengthen as we will make more investments,' he said. But, there were services that the company can augment technology that can make onsite or offshore delivery more effective. 'The third methodology is that we implement programmes that would help us with 'less people and more software' that is a part of overall way of changing the paradigm from people to software model. Automation is to make business less people dependent. All of them put together would support our business model,' he said. MORE UNI RS PS AN1902
