Prez cuts short Varanasi visit, to attend BHU centenary celebrations only

Varanasi, May 12 (UNI) President Pranab Mukherjee has cut short his Varanasi visit and now he will attend only the Centenary Year Celebrations of the Banaras Hindu University(BHU) at 1800 hrs today. He will return back to New Delhi, later in the night. The President was slated to attend couple of religious functions at the Ganga ghat and at Baba Vishwanath temple tomorrow morning, but it was cancelled. The information of the cancellation of the programme at Ganga ghat and Kashi Vishwanath temple was given here by Additional District Magistrate(ADM) Protocol Dr Om Prakash Choubey. However, elaborate security are in place for the President's visit beside security personnel have been engaged for the Janata Dal (united) rally at Pindra this afternoon in which Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar will participate. The special aircraft of the President will land at the Babatpur airport at around 1545 hours and he will go to BHU by a chopper. Later, after delivering a centennial lecture at BHU, Mr Mukherjee will attend a dinner hosted by the BHU VC Girish Chandra Tripathi and there after will leave for airport by road at around 2030 hrs. At the airport, the President would be welcomed by UP governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Though Mr Yadav will leave for Lucknow thereafter, but the Governor will also attend the BHU function. At BHU the President will be present when UP governor Ram Naik will release commemorative coins of Rs 10 and Rs 100 denominations. The President would also lay the foundation stone of six-storied 'Bharat Adhyayan Kendra' that will work on incorporating the evolved ancient knowledge and traditions for development of the country. The faculty of visual arts of university will also set up a gallery-cum-exhibition at the SB hall to showcase the hundred years of BHU, its various achievements and developments.A special brochure on the essence of BHU would also be presented to the President on the occasion. This will be the second visit of Mukherjee as president to the BHU. In the past, he had visited BHU on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of the university's founder, Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya, to participate in the special convocation in Swatantrata Bhawan, BHU on December 25, 2012.
