Pondicherry University declines extending reservation to Puducherry students

Puducherry, Sep 25 (UNI) Pondicherry University, a central university has declined to extend reservation of seats to Puducherry students in all the courses conducted by the University.
Responding to the resolution adopted in the territorial assembly seeking 25 percent reservation of seats to students from Puducherry in all courses, the Vice Chancellor Gurmeet Singh on Tuesday told a press conference said the genesis of central university is for all students in the country and not for any particular state. The land has to be provided in the state where the University is situated, but in lieu of that reservation could not be provided to the students of the state. India is one country and the land belonged to the country, he said citing the examples of other Central Universities in Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Rajasthan, Jawaharlal Nehru University and others where no such exclusive reservation has been granted to the students from those states.
Universities promote excellence and opportunity to grow and have free competition for everybody. Except statutory reservation no other reservation could be granted he said adding that the existing reservations in seats for Puducherry students in certain courses already granted at the time of inception would continue. Faculty members who were present in the press conference said that reservation for Puducherry students were granted for certain courses, which at that time were not offered by affiliated colleges of Pondicherry University. However another member claimed that there were more than 25 percent students from Puducherry admitted in various courses in the University.
