New Delhi, Jan 18 (UNI) Asha Devi, the mother of the medical student whose brutal gang rape shamed the nation, on Saturday, lashed out at senior counsel Indira Jaising for requesting her to forgive the four convicts who are on death row.
"While I fully identify with the pain of Asha Devi, I urge her to follow the example of Indian National Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi who forgave Nalini and said she didn't not want the death penalty for her. We are with you but against death penalty," Ms Jaising had tweeted on Friday.
Because of people like Indira Jaising, rape victims do not get justice, Nirbhaya's mother told a TV channel.
'Who is Indira Jaising to give me such a suggestion? Entire nation wants the convicts to be executed. Just because of people like her, rape victims do not obtain justice. Can't believe how she even dared to suggest this. I met her many times over the years in the Supreme Court, not once did she ask for my well being and today she is speaking for convicts. Such people make a living by supporting rapists," Ms Devi said.
Those who held rallies in 2012 shouting slogans of women safety, Ms Devi asserted, were delaying the punishment of convicts for political gain.
After the rejection of the mercy plea, a Delhi court on Friday had issued fresh death warrants against the four convicts--Vinay Sharma (24), Mukesh Kumar (30), Akshaya Kumar (27) and Pawan Gupta (23).
