Israel seeks temporary deal with Hamas to release hostages before renewed fighting

Jerusalem, Apr 16 (UNI) The Israeli authorities are seeking a temporary ceasefire deal with Palestinian movement Hamas to ensure the release of hostages before resuming fighting in the Gaza Strip, Hamas' political bureau member Izzat al-Risheq said.

On Tuesday, The Times of Israel reported that Hamas had rejected all clauses of the latest ceasefire and hostage deal proposal, increasing the number of Palestinian prisoners it wanted to be released by Israel. The movement also reportedly said it was ready to release only about 20 hostages—women and men over 50—as part of the first stage of the deal and demanded that Israel agree to a six-week ceasefire. The movement's demand for the second stage of the deal included a permanent ceasefire.
