Maharashtra Congress questions Centre over rising petrol, diesel prices

Pune, Jun 18 (UNI) Maharashtra Congress on Thursday questioned the BJP-led Centre over the rising petrol and diesel prices in the country while the fuel rates in the international market are plummeting.
State Congress Secretary Mohan Joshi asserted that the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman should give a clarification to the citizens, who are already reeling under the COVID-19 woes, regarding the mismatch between the domestic and international fuel rates.
The petrol and diesel prices are being hiked since past eleven days, he said, adding that the price of diesel was increased by 55 paise per litre while that of petrol was raised by 69 paise per litre.
He further asked that the international market rate is 40 dollars per barrel, then why the prices are surging in India as compared to other countries?
Former MLA Joshi proclaimed that the Centre has increased excise duty on the fuels since past six years, and the move has largely benefitted the government.
Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has always intervened over such hikes while demanding to slash the excise duty, however, the Centre has turned a deaf ear to the rightful plea, he remarked.
He averred that many have lost their jobs following economic fallout of the COVID-19, the hike in fuel prices should be rolled back considering these circumstances.
