Top jail cop Roopa shunted out

Bengaluru, Jul 17(UNI) In a major reshuffle of IPS cadre, the Karnataka government transferred top IPS official D Roopa, till now the deputy IGP of Prisons after she had revealed a major corruption scam in Parappana Agrahara central jail in the city, to the Traffic wing of the State police. Ms Roopa in a report had alleged that special treatment were given to AIADMK leader V K Sasikala, who is serving a four-year jail term in Jayalalitha disproportionate assets case. Her report and going to the press had stirred a major controversy and the Karnataka government had ordered a high-level probe into the incident. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had expressed his ire over the top cops speaking to the media over the incident and said it is against service rule and any such incidents in the jail the officials will be dealt with and ordered the high-level probe. After the incident made headlines and the issues behind it turned murky with jail officials shifting 32 inmates, who allegedly reported the wrong goings in the jail to Ms Roopa during her visit to the jail, were shifted to other jails in the state. There are also allegations that the undertrial and serving convicts shifted, were beaten up badly by the jail authorities for protesting their shifting. They were shifted just before the inquiry team is to visit the jail today. A government notification said that Ms Roopa was posted in the same capacity as Deputy IGP and Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety in place of Mr A S N Murthy, who is now transferred as ADGP Forest Cell. The state government posted Mr N S Megharikh, hitherto ADGP of Anti Corruption Bureau as ADGP Prisons. He was earlier the Commissioner of police for Bengaluru. Mr M N Reddi, till now DGP of police Intelligence Bureau, has also been transferred as DGP of ACB. Mr Reddi had come into criticism from Mr Siddaramaiah himself who had objected to the failure of intelligence wing that did not act early before the communal disturbance soon after killing of a RSS activist in Dakshina Kannada district. Opposition BJP had raised a major agitation in protest of this murder. UNI RS MSP RSS1410
