Hyderabad, Jul 5 (UNI) Union Minister for Civil Aviation and Industries Suresh Prabhu on Thursday said the government has sanctioned Rs 2,600 crore special package for the leather and footwear industry which is expected to generate around 5-6 lakhs jobs directly.
Addressing after inaugurating Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) here, Mr Prabhu said the special incentive package will be for human resource development in the sector, setting up of mega leather, footwear and accessories clusters, integrated development of leather sector, leather technology, innovation and environment protection, promotion of Indian brands overseas and others.
Thanking Telangana government for allotment of land for the Institute, he said the FDDI was set-up by the Ministry of commernce in the year 1986 for the development and promotion of footwear ands allied product industries.
Design is the most important element in the product and the proper design would be value added to the product, Mr Prabhu said and expressed the traditional product would not survive unless upgraded to meet global competition.
To promote emerging sectors and modernising the existing industries, the government has finalised the 'new industrial policy, which is set to be announced soon, Mr Prabhu added.
