Bengaluru, Mar 16 (UNI) In the context of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, AICC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday said that the Congress pledges to review the labor codes introduced by the Narendra Modi government, aiming to strengthen labor rights.
The party intends to make suitable amendments to protect workers' rights and end the contractual system of employment in core government services, he said.
Kharge said the party plans to enforce minimum standards of social security for contract employment in the private sector, ensuring protection for workers' rights.
He also emphasized that these promises are not just rhetoric but are backed by a track record of implementation in the past. They highlight their history of enacting laws to protect labor rights and criticize the weakening of these laws by the current government, he said.
Alongside labor rights, Congress also promised guarantees in healthcare, minimum wage, urban employment, and social security.
Kharge said the party pledges to enact the right to health law (Swasthya Adhikar) ensuring universal healthcare coverage, including free essential diagnostics, medicines, treatment, surgery, and palliative care.
The Congress also promises to raise the national minimum wage to Rs 400 per day, extending this minimum wage to all MGNREGA workers under the Shramik ka Sannmaan (Dignity of Labour) guarantee, Kharge said.
The party plans to introduce an employment guarantee act (Shehri Rozgar Yojana) for urban areas, focusing on infrastructure development and climate resilience, the AICC chief said.
The Congress also guarantees comprehensive social security for all unorganized workers, including life insurance and accident insurance, under the Samajik Suraksha (Social Security) guarantee, Kharge said.
